The way I defined the radical prayer is this. It is to prayerfully, commit to go where God wants you to go and do what he wants you to do.
Jai:Welcome back everybody to Eden's conflict. I'm your host Jai. And today I have a special guest with me, my newly established friend in the spiritual faith. Joakim is great to have
Joakim:you on here. Thank you very much. its an honor to be here and excited to, to share.
Jai:Praise God, praise God. Well, I wanted to bring you in. I was curious to learn more about your story. You and I actually met over this past weekend at another event called wilderness wanderings. And we didn't have really much time to talk or get to know each other there. So I really wanted to hear what, like more about you and. And specifically you had this topic you wanted to cover is the idea of radical prayer. Now I enjoy prayers in a central part of my life. It has to be anybody who wants to do a deeper spiritual walk and connection with God. You must have prayer as a part of it. But tell me more about radical prayer. What is it that makes your prayer life or the way you describe it as radical?
Joakim:Yes. So, eh, It's kind of inspired from Luke chapter 10. Verse 2. You know, Jesus says there then he said to me. The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few, therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. It's very strong language. It's using your in the Greek. Actually, he says, basically he says, plead. For labors, that God will send out labors. It's like the word I use it. When they're throwing out. demons, and when, someone is really sick. That's a kind of prayer, very intense prayer, but then also the key word that I want to focus a bit on is it's the word is to send out labors. That's also a very strong word in Greek it's ek-bal'-lo. Which means to drive out or to throw out they also, you just said for throwing out demons, throwing rocks. So basically the prayer is is like, Jesus says, plead. For laborers. That God will throw out labors. ek-bal'-lo labors into his harvest. Basically. Prayed like this God. Send out laborers into your harvest. And I give you permission to start with me, you know? God God said. Who shall I send? Who will go for me? And sometimes we have a tendency. as Christians is like, Lord, here am I send him? The way I defined the radical prayer is this. It is to prayerfully, commit to go where God wants you to go and do what he wants you to do. It's kind of like a daily, total consecration to God where you allow him to lead you and guide you in everything and to lead you into his already prepared. Good works for us. actually it reminds me of one of my favorites verses, which is kind of fits really well on this. Note its Ephesians 2 verse 10. There it says, for, we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus or God's masterpiece. As some translational. Put it we are God's masterpiece God's workmenship created in Christ. Jesus. to do good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. So the idea is that God has a plan for our life and it's a radical thing. I grew up as a Christian, but I did not leave like this. But it's something that will revolutionize our Christian experience when we do that. Exciting ways. It's kind of a scary prayer. It's a tough prayer to pray, but when we do it will revolutionize our Christian experience. And I think honestly, it's something that should be kind of part of our DNA as Christians. Yeah. But unfortunately, I think it's something that many, many people they miss out of. Yeah. So, so
Jai:essentially it's kind of like an in to take it into that biblical narrative experience. I always like looking at analogies. Right. So if in, in this case, the, the analogy we're being here is prayer first off is this action. It is in a state of movement in a state of, of doing something. It's not just when I sit down and I kneel and just, okay, God, bless my day, bless my life. You know, this is good. Oh. And if you can. Can help somebody who's dealing with this thing or help me with whatever. We really want to think of it more as like, If prayer is a Slingshot, God, I'm willing to be the rock that it's throwing. Nice. I'm willing to be the thing that is going to do cause cause the Slingshot just by itself is just a piece of rope. The spin in the air. But the moment there's that? Wait, there's that stone that's ready to be launched. Now there's a force behind it. That's going to do something. And so we can think of it almost as like prayer. When I am just saying, God, you've got the Slingshot, just keep spinning it around. And if you can do something with it in my life versus like, God, I'm willing to be the stone that you use to sling out and actually impact the world.
Joakim:I like that analogy it reminds me of an African saying that says, When you pray. Move your foot. maybe you're a part
Jai:of the fulfillment. You are. Yeah. So, can you give an example in the Bible where we see Christ having this kind of radical prayer experience.
Joakim:It's interesting. You said that for instance, the same word. ek-bal'-lo.. It's kind of like ball. It's like you throw something. But you sit at a used, for instance, when it talks about Jesus being driven into the wilderness by the spirit. And that's where he's tempted by certain. So basically. He was ek-bal'-lo-ed. He got through this. Big trial because he was willing to follow God leading. And I think as a fact, he, of course he left heaven. He came down to the start. He was willing to leave his comfort. He was leaving to go, but it got actually something that is really cool. You know, when you read the book of Matthew, I recently wrote a paper on the book of Matthew. There is one key word, but it's like, repeat that again and again and again, other gospels, other places too. But especially in Matthew, like a favorite word of his, and that's the word fulfilled? Fulfilled fulfilled. And times fulfilled, fulfilled. You still have justice life as a fulfillment of the prophecy was a fulfillment of God's plan. In other words, Jesus's life, wasn't an accident. He was basically walking into God's already prepared. Good works for him. He was willing to go. But God wanted him to go to say, What God wanted him to say to move, or we've got to want him to move. And I think that's a key reason for his success and none of us, he surrendered everything to God, everything he wants his attitude. Everything he did. Basically. I heard a statement and I think it's through set up. So after it was Christ emptied of south, that he made no plans for himself, not apart from God. accepted God's plans for him. Until you buy the father on folded his plans. So should we depend upon God at our license, but as simple as parking, obviously, So I think. Jesus was day by day. He spent time with the father. early in the morning. And God guide that Haman, that impressed him where he should go when he should do. I think it's when we learn to live like this. It's really a powerful concept. You might have heard there is this famous. Author is actually unknown, but it's this kind of famous classic. poem, that summarizes Jesus's life it's called one solitary life. And it goes like this really thought provoking it says. Talking about Jesus. He wasn't born in an obscure village. The child of a pessimist woman. He grew up in another obscure village where he worked in a carpenter shop. It was 30. Then for three years, he was an itinerant preacher. He never had a family or own the home. He didn't go to college. Not that I. itself. He didn't do it. He never set foot inside a big city. He never traveled far from the place where he was born. He never wrote a book or held an office. He did not have. All of the things that usually accompany greatness. Why me while still a young man. The tide of popular opinion turned against him, his friends deserted him. He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for the only piece of property he had, his coat when he was dead, he was taken down and let him borrow the grid. And listen to the last part here. 19 centuries have come and gone. Today. He is the central figure for much of the human race, all the army stuff ever marched and all the navy's that ever sailed all the parliaments that ever sat. And all the King's that ever reigned put together. Have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as this one solitary life. That
Jai:Is crazy to think about. And that is where you can really say that. The radical aspect of prayer. Like it comes to life because when you are asking God, like for those divine appointments, when Christ is seeking out and saying like, God, not my will, your will be done. He's preparing himself to go. The places that for himself are very uncomfortable. They're very, and in fact, a self. defeating purpose, it's like nobody wants to give up their life. Nobody wants to die. And yet here he is saying, God, I'm willing to go that far for you. And in that process, God then amplifies the results of that beyond the scope of anybody else in the world in existence. And you right. Yes, we've had many teachers, there are many prophets, there are many types of religious entities but nobody has ever created so much confliction and controversy over what they did and who they are. And I think that is one of the biggest things that we have an evidence
Joakim:for. I think it's called your. Because it's like, we don't know sometimes what will really make a big impact. Sure. And you still want a good example in the Bible is the woman not anointed just as his. It looked like kind of a worthless little thing. She spent all this money, you know, So much money to buy this oil. But this has said. Everywhere where the gospel is preached. This story will be told. Um, she made a huge impact and inspired so many people. And so that's why it, from an outside perspective, I think this life is not really making a difference, but yes, it's the most impactful life ever. And when we learn to live like that gap, you guide me into your pants for me today. You will have a big impact will make a big difference. It. We'll be meaningful and it will be exciting and give you more joy, meaning that anything else?
Jai:Very cool. Very cool. So then we've looked at what radical prayer is. We've looked at a biblical example of how Christ lived it. Do you have a personal experience to what you feel you've seen this. This element or aspect where you found yourself praying about something. And the result may not have been what you expected, but you found that the situation ended up playing out in a way that fit uniquely to you kind of that. Perfect lineup of things that you're like, I couldn't have planned this myself. It had to be God who was doing these things along the way. Yeah.
Joakim:I, when I think of the radical prayer. I would say when I'm asked. 17 years old, I started giving Bible studies. I started preaching something I have never imagined before. And I just a very shy kid. I'd rather have a five hour written test then a five minute presentation in front of 15 people. Yeah. I started feel impressed that God wanted me to get involved with others so in mission trips, leadership, organizing events. And when I was 19, I came across this small little book. That's kind of where I first got this concept that I kind of made my own in a way. And it's called the radical prayer by. A good Bible preacher called Derek Morris. So I read his book and this inspired me to truly live like this. As I started to really make this kind of. A core of who I am like a core philosophy of my life to. To go where God wants me to go and do what he wants me to do. And basically around that time, I had to decide what to do next. And I ended up moving to the very north of Norway and from Norway and Sweden, I moved to the very north of Norway. To work as a Bible worker. And I was a bit scared before, like I never worked at that before. I didn't know anyone there. This is kind of far out in the boonies in the winter. It's an interesting place that in the winter, you don't see the sun for several months. It never comes up. Yeah. For several months. It's like to go there by car. Is. It will take you two or three days from the capital of Norway, the same distance you drive through the south of Europe. He dropped your boat to Rome. It says far away, you can't take trends there. It's like, I don't know anyone just. This tiny little church. I don't know really if people would be interested in Bible studies, but anyway, I felt impressed that. God wants me to go there. So, I follow this philosophy, so I decided to go. But there were some contacts. We were going to fall off some Bible study, leads some Bible study interest. And so one of the first things, when we on a guy from France, actually, that I really didn't really know from before we moved up there together, we lived together. We worked together. He didn't speak no. That's kind of interesting scenario. But God, I think like both of us up there. And then we started to follow up this Bible study interest and we invited people to this Bible study group. So, you know, you can imagine. We move all over the country. I'm starting to get into ministry and I'm excited. You know, what will God do? God has led me here. What is going to happen? And not you, of course, hoping for the best. Right, right. So we're making everything ready for his first Bible study group. And we're inviting people, we have this nice, new sofas, we have some candles, we have some little things to eat, and we're expecting what's going to happen. And then the time comes. And low and behold only one person shows up. And when that's happened. I'm quite the cleric. You know, I, you can imagine I was not too happy. I was like God why in the world? Like, why did you lead me up here? I remember I walked outside where I lived out on this mountain up there in the north, and I've walked on this mountain. I was praying and I was disappointed. I was kind of. Angry with God. Why did you lead me here? Why should I move all the way over here to work as a Bible worker. if people don't want to learn about the Bible anyway. Sure. And I was really praying with God out there on that mountain. 19 years old, beginning of my ministry. And as I prayed, God reminded me of Jesus. Um, and he reminded me how Jesus. The ultimate example to live the radical prayer, he left the glory of heaven. He left the throne of heaven. He left this amazing place. Perfect peace amazing joy, his heavenly family. And he came down to this earth. He lived up. Hard life. He had to flee He had to live in poverty. He, went through all these things and he was working self sacrificially for all this years is sent out the 12 on the 70. And they were trying to reach these people, but now he's at the end of his life is coming to the garden of gethsemane. And it looks hopeless. Like if someone should receive the great sacrifice, he's about to give it should be Israel. God's people, but they don't receive him. Um, if someone in Israel, it should be the 12th, but one of them has left to betray. And one of his closest disciples will soon deny him. and basically looked like it's in vain. Don't go through that. pain will not make a difference anyway. And the thing is this Jesus's could still have called for legions of angels. He could still have taken the blood, sweat away from his. Brown and went up to heaven and left humanity to die in their own sin. But praise the Lord. He decided to go through. Um, to, to not give up. Keep pushing forward to still go through that pain. And as I'm praying, God is reminding me of this story and God is impressing me with this thought. As I'm up there on that mountain, He says, Jesus would have gone to all of that pain and. He would've gone to all of that sacrifice. Even if he was only for one. Person. Wow. So I'm impressed with that thought. The holy spirit brings that thought to my mind, and then God brings this thought to me. I want you to be here. I've led you here and I want you to be there. But if only one person wow would be saved as a result of it, And that was kind of what I care about to me. But when I thought about it, I was back. Well, okay. Really? Yeah. So basically I was content and I thought, okay. God, if you want me to be here, I'm willing to be here. I want to follow God. I want to serve God in all of my life. Wherever he leads me? Whatever he wants me to do. If he lets me to. To live in Sweden. I do right now or Somalia or America or Afghanistan, but whatever it is, even if only one person, as the result of something he wants me to do would be saved. Imagine meeting that person in heaven. He comes after you, he gives you a big. Hug. With a big smile. I'm thinking if what you do sometimes now there are challenges when you follow God, sometimes it's tough, but I tell you it's a blessing to follow God and it will be worth everything. Nothing gives more meaning. I, my big dream for many years to become a big, a professional soccer player, the big sport in Europe. At the, if it can be part of sweetest national debt from it, I would have been a great honor, a great privilege, a great joy. But when you think about it, As Christians Paul says in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5. We are ambassadors for Christ. I think all of that we are ambassadors. For the king and creator of the universe. Nothing more exciting, nothing more meaningful, nothing more important. We can be involved in. I'd like to think of faith as an acronym. And standing for fantastic adventures in trusting him. Fantastic adventures in trusting him. And to me, I would say kind of when I started to pray the radical prayer, that was the beginning for me. I went up there first in this. To Hammerfest in the north of Norway to be there for six months. It turned out to be one year turned into two years. And it was a great time. I grew a lot. It was a big blessing. We have Bible studies with lots of people. And after that got us just opened door after door, after door, I preached. Um, the gospel in 20, 30 different countries, six continents things. I would have never imagined I've published two books. I've been involved in stocking a number of ministries. I would, I'm never imagined. And record programs podcast TV programs in different countries. It's just been such a blessing. Like, I'd like to say this also, it's not so much about ability, but rather availability. God doesn't always call the qualified, but he always qualifies the call. I've really been blessed to see things I would've never imagined I'm being such a joy. Yes. Challenge has at times some decisions are harder, but every time when I look back, man, I don't regret. I never regret them. That would be the same one. We choose to follow him whether it's easy or not.
Jai:Yeah. That's so cool to see how it's like when you truly give yourself over to that. And I have a similar experience, where we're God opened the door for me to go to an evangelism school in Oregon, actually. And, the program. I thought it was going to go to, um, I had volunteered. They were like, Hey, we really want people to come and serve in. I think it was Guam. And so I'm calling him up. I was like, Hey, I'm, I'm willing to go. I'm willing to move. You know, what, what do you need? No response, no response, no response. And I was just like, you know what? After a month I was like, I'm tired of reaching out to these people. I shouldn't have to chase you to give you myself my time. My freedom. And so I start praying. I was like, Lord. Look, I don't know what you want me to do. But whatever it is, whatever it is, I will do it. A hundred percent guaranteed. I will do it. Here's the catch. I will only do it if you drop it right in front of my lap. Without me making any effort to find out what it is. It literally has to be on my doorstep. It has to be something so obvious that you want me to do that thing. That I can't deny it in any other way. Hmm. Long story short. I pray this for about two weeks. Like, God, I'm willing to go whatever you want, but you have to bring it. I'm not going to look for it. I'm not going to ask about it. You will have to bring it to me. Two weeks go by and I get a phone call. If you've ever heard of Louis Torres. He's an old school. Kind of evangelists who pastor. Yeah. And, um, this, this brother calls me up and he's like, hello? And I was like, yes. And he's like, He was like, whoa. Uh, I just want to tell you about my school that I have up here in Oregon, and it's called mission college of evangelism. And this is what we teach and he's telling me the website and. And he's like just going on, like giving his sales pitch and I'm confused. I was like, how did you even get this number? I like I never applied to a school. And he's a
Joakim:well known preacher, busy guy. He
Jai:is! Yeah. And I was like, and you're calling me in person. I was like, who. Like I was so confused. And then we go through this conversation and I'm just trying to wrap it up in my head. I was like, okay, how do I get off the phone with this guy? And I can hear the pitch, the sales pitch coming. And I look at the program and I look at it and I was like, well, I thank you for your time, but I see your program on your website is like$4,000, almost$5,000 for those term to go, to get your certificate up there of evangelism. And I was like, I appreciate your offer, but I don't have this kind of money to go to this program. And this is where this is where it hits me. All right. When you have that radical prayer where you're willing to do. What God says. And you're saying, God, here it is. I'm, On that stone. Put me in your Slingshot. He hits me back with this. He's like, oh no. I'm not calling to tell you about the program. I'm calling to tell you somebody already paid for your tuition by name. How old are they? Wow. He's like, he's like somebody called and paid for your tuition. I'm just calling to see if you're coming. Hmm. That to me. And it was really through that experience of going to that school, that I got a passion to be like, I really want to serve you God, even more now. But that's me. I almost dropped the phone. Like I was like, what do you mean somebody called and paid for my tuition? And they were like, yeah, somebody already paid for your tuition by name. I'm just calling to see if you're going to take it. If not, we're going to offer it to someone else. So that, and God ended up opening doors with my work so that I could get the time off work when I shouldn't have like so many things just fell into place. And I think that's exactly what you're talking about here, when, you really commit to prayer and say that it's like, God. What you want your will be done. Use me throw me into that field. So that things can happen and things can begin to change. It's like he will open doors in a way that you're like only God could have made that happen. Yeah. And that's the beauty of it. And it's not to say, yeah, it's not to just dishearten people that it's like. It's like, well, I prayed for this thing and God didn't answer it. Yeah. It's not like we're expecting, we're not trying to put God in a box and say, Hey, you have to answer in this path. Yeah. Where's. We're trying to say, God, show me the path you want things to be answered in. And it's like, and then I give you permission to put me in that path. That's the difference there. And so sometimes if we're finding ourselves disappointed by our prayer, perhaps we are not truly surrendered to be the stone. We're just telling them, Hey God, swing your Slingshot. And he's waiting for me, like, all right. So when are you going to get into it? So I can actually get this done.
Joakim:I really liked that. It works well with this concept. It really does. It's always fun when you're sick. It's such a blessing. When you look back from those kinds of experiences in a realistic world, God opened this door and God led me there and going to a school like that. I encouraged people, but I do the same as well was such a blessing in my, helped me to get involved and to serve Gavin. I'm actually in one with running a similar school in Europe right now, AFCO Europe. Four month. Mission training program and it's really something to consider. Seriously. I encourage, I think every Christian should do something like that because he really helped you to serve God and to reach people and it's great fellowship. Great time. And, um, but yeah. And of course, like you said, sometimes God brings something to our door. Sometimes, maybe it takes weeks. We are praying where maybe we are not ready for it yet. We grow as Christians or sometimes it's as we study, as we consider options of service. So there are different ways. Sometimes we have maybe more of a part to play, but, but God will guide us when we are willing. And when we follow him, he will, he will open doors. He will. We will say people will do things. Beautiful
Jai:things happen now. So then I guess in closing here, let's say somebody's listening to this episode and they're like, okay, this sounds really interesting. Radical prayer. All right. What would be, a couple of pointers or tips that somebody could immediately start using today. Cause that's really what we want to do on this podcast. We want to provide. Practical knowledge and perhaps even some practical Bible verses because we're really about claiming the power in the word of God. Not because it's, it's some type of spell, but because it's like the one who spoke it. Is in the word. And so it was like, we want to learn to bring that into our hearts. So maybe what are, what's a Bible verse that we could claim to really say, Hey God, I'm serious. I want to start being used by you in practical prayer or radical prayer. And another, just maybe tip for somebody who's just starting out saying, okay. What should I think about what should my mentality be?
Joakim:Yeah. I like that How do we live that I rather like to say the live, the radical prayer, first of all, I think it's good to be aware of that. It's impossible. Okay. We can't do that in our own power. So basically the first tip I would say is to let God empower you to live like that. I like to Philippians 2, 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do according to his good pleasure. Philippians 4, 13. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Also the promise of Luke 11, 13. it says that God is more willing to give his holy spirit and we are to give good gifts to our children. So basically let God, he wants to empower you to live like that. You can't do it in yourself, but, he wants to, and he's able to empower you to live like that. The second tip I would say is to be willing to go out of your comfort zone. Because if you are unwilling to do that, you can't leave the radical prayer. Sure. But I like to put it like this life begins at the end of your comfort zone. It's been you and your comfort zone. That's when you get into the faith zone I'm not a God zone. That's when things started to get exciting. and meaningful so be willing to do that. It might be scary. Yeah, I get that. But you will not regret it. I tell you, you will not regret it. So be willing to go out of your comfort zone. That's my second tip. And by the way, I want to mention. I think it's a core part of true Christianity, Jesus said things like this, Luke 9 23 is. And he said to them all, if anyone decides to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me. If you're a true Christian, you basically, you die to self daily. You deny yourself. You basically, you choose God's will ahead of yours. God's plan ahead of yours and. That's what when to conversion. But sometimes, I dunno, we don't talk so much about lifting our cross denying ourselves today is not the most popular preaching, but it's right. And the thing is we view it as a negative, but the thing is, it is kind of a gateway to the best life I'm to true peace. I'm. Anyway, the last tip I want to share practically is. And in order to live this in order to, to experience this. It's to daily consequent. Consecrate yourself to God. Daily consequences. I really liked this little statement in his classic beautiful Christian book translated in 100 languages. Called steps to crisis put is puts it like this success. I think it's really, really good. Good statement is, has consecrate yourself to God in the morning. Make this your very first work. And that's kind of my habit. I like to start today with concentrated self, to God, and then. Let your prayer be. Take me oh Lord as holy thine. I lay all my plans at thy feet use me today in thy service abide with me. And let all my work. Be wrought in thee. I think it's a beautiful prayer. I don't think you have to pray exactly what those words, I kind of memorize this quote and I kind of do it sometimes, but the most important thing is that you. And what you're saying, but I think I want to encourage you today. Surrender yourself. What is your own, your heart from it today? What is your plan for me today? Surrender your agenda. Let him lead you from day-to-day. And when you do that, he will lead you into. He will do his masterpiece into his already prepared plan for your life. He that knows the end from the beginning. He will lead you into this exciting fate adventures that he has prepared for you. I like how Corrie Ten Boom put it. And never be afraid to trust an unknown future. To a known God. When you know God, you can trust. That's a good plan for yourself. I encourage you. Do they surrender yourself day by day. Let him lead you into his plan for your life. He has a beautiful path for your life. It will be worth it. And you will see someone who blessings. God will do great things. So I really hope that this will become eventually more and more a part of your very DNA and the core philosophy of your life, how you live your life, you will never get it.
Jai:And that's a really good point. Like I I'd read that book before. And that, that quote. On committing yourself to God in the morning, but I had, I've forgotten the quote, but I do do that. Like that is a park and I can, I can attest to that, that the days that I wake up, where I make my intention. To let God lead just first and foremost, it's like, those are the days where often have the sometimes would be considered the hardest days.
